Eddystone Rifle State Historical Marker  Dedication

November 9, 2019

Eddystone, PA.  As part of the WWI Centennial, our Springfield American Legion Post 227 member Kurt Sellers did extensive research in 2017-18 on  the history of the Model 1917 rifle produced in Eddystone during World War I.

With three manufacturers inclusive producing the M1917 and two government arsenals producing the M1903 rifle,  Eddystone alone accounted  for 47% of the total wartime rifle manufacture.  More American soldiers were issued an Eddystone-made rifle than any other weapon used in the war.

Kurt Sellers, an avid military historian and firearms collector, has documented and given many presentations on the history of this rifle.

The leadership of Eddystone Borough was so impressed with Kurt's presentation they agreed to his suggestion to apply  to Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) and, if approved, fund erection of  a historical marker on the former factory grounds.  Kurt provided the historical documentation for the application.  (Note state marker criteria is very stringent and approval difficult to obtain.)

On Saturday, November 9, 2019, at 1 PM a state historical  marker will be dedicated at Simpson St and 13th Ave in Eddystone  (vicinity of the Walmart parking lot).

Kurt will be the keynote speaker for the dedication ceremony.  Refreshments will be served after the event at the Saint James Alumni Association Doghouse (E 9th @ Simpson St.)

This is another major contribution to the Delaware County, Pennsylvania community by a member of the Springfield American Legion Post 227.
