On Memorial Day
May 25, 2026
The Springfield community will honor the life, service, and memory of its residents and our nation's service members who lost their lives in service to our country. We will especially pay tribute to Staff Sergeant William Hughes Bathgate, 2nd Lt. William F. McKenna, and Sergeant Stanley S. Smith who gave their lives in defense of the United States and our allies in World War II.
Although the focus of this year's remembrance is on these three fallen heroes, we will honor all who gave their life for our country. We continue to keep them and their families in our thoughts and prayers.
Sequence of events:
-
9:30 a.m.: Ceremony at the St. Francis of Assisi (SFA) Church WWII memorial, corner of Saxer Ave and Johnston Rd
-
Parade from SFA down Saxer Ave to Powell Rd, then to the municipal parking lot at Old Central School behind Wawa
-
10:00 a.m.: Primary remembrance outside the Old Central School, Saxer Ave
Refreshments will be served at the Old Central School at the conclusion of the remembrance. The pretzels are generously donated by the Wawa Foundation.
The lives of these men, though marked by tragedy, continue to inspire deep gratitude and enduring remembrance.
Staff Sergeant William Hughes Bathgate of Springfield, born January 24, 1919, was a proud graduate of Springfield High School, where he excelled as captain of the track and basketball teams and competed at the Pennsylvania State Track Championships. He served with the 443rd Bombardment Squadron, 320th Bomb Group, flying the B‑26 Marauder in the Mediterranean theater. On August 31, 1943, he was killed in a non‑combat aircraft accident in North Africa while aboard a training flight with an experienced pilot and a newly assigned lieutenant. He now rests at the North Africa American Cemetery in Carthage, Tunisia. His service earned him the Air Medal, among other honors. A Springfield Hero Banner on Church Road ensures his name remains alive in the community he loved.
Second Lieutenant William F. McKenna, a Swarthmore native and 1937 graduate of West Catholic High School, served as the bombardier aboard B‑17 Flying Fortress Shack Rabbit II of the 413th Bomb Squadron, 96th Bomb Group. On September 24, 1943, during a mission targeting a Luftwaffe airfield in Brittany, France, his aircraft was shot down over the English Channel. All ten crew members were lost, and the aircraft was never recovered. His name is memorialized on the Tablets of the Missing at the Cambridge American Cemetery in England. McKenna was married to Patricia Green of Springfield, and the double tragedy of his loss was compounded when his father died of a heart attack upon receiving the news. A Requiem Mass was held at St. Francis of Assisi Church.
Sergeant Stanley Stephen Smith, born May 19, 1919, in Springfield, served with Company G, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division. A paratrooper who had already fought in Sicily during Operation Husky, he jumped into Normandy in the early hours of D‑Day, June 6, 1944. His unit’s mission was to secure the critical town of Sainte‑Mère‑Église. He was killed near Fauville when German artillery struck his mortar team. Smith was 25 years old, married to Myrtice Alma Hutcherson, and father to a young daughter, Rita. He now lies at the Normandy American Cemetery, Plot E, Row 6, Grave 21.
These heroes are all included on the memorial plaques at the Springfield High School, Springfield Township, and the WWII memorial at St. Francis of Assisi Church.
We honor these three men—not only for how they died, but for how they lived: with courage, devotion, and a sense of duty that carried them far from home. Their sacrifice is woven into the freedom we cherish, and their memory remains forever part of Springfield’s story.
